Summary:
The Messianic Hope of the Roman Era in the Context of the Presence and Absence
of the Temple - the Central Element of Judaism
This essay represents a survey regarding the topic of the Messianic hope of the Roman era in the context of the presence and absence of the central element of Judaism, namely, the Temple. The author wants to prove both historically and theologically, that there is an important link between the concept of the Messiah and the central role of the Second Temple in Judaism. It stands out that this connection is based of the eternal, divine and social attributes both of the Messiah and the Temple. It is important to point out that the doctrine about the Messiah was not constant. It suffered periodical changes, depending of the historical circumstances or of the conception of the Messiah being in trend at certain times. This link can be easily seen, tracking the paradigm shifts in the Judaism of the first century AD. In this case, the major paradigm shift appears on the background of the destruction of the Second Temple of Jerusalem, in 70 AD. In order to have a better understanding of the relation between the Messiah and the Temple, a study that puts together historical facts, biblical theological elements and also beliefs taken from the Talmudic rabbinical tradition is salutary. Certainly, the Christian view of the debate will also be taken into account. The conclusions of the essay shall reveal certain differences between the Judaic understanding and the Christian understanding regarding the relation between the Messiah and the Temple. In Judaism, the messianic expectations are fundamentally liked to the Temple. In Christianity, the Messiah replaces the Temple as the blessed presence of Yahweh, through incarnation.
